Antique & Vintage Postcards

Three immaculate white Lipizzan stallions step in perfect formation across the gilded Winter Riding School of Vienna's Hofburg Palace, their riders resplendent in the Spanish Riding School's scarlet tail-coats, bicorne hats, and gold epaulettes — a performance tradition unchanged since the 16th century. Spectators in formal dress crowd the baroque gallery above, red-and-white Austrian bunting swags the colonnade, and chandeliers cast a warm theatrical glow over the riding hall that Emperor Charles VI commissioned in 1729. Sender Mary Jose was in Vienna in late September 1987 and had gone to see "these horses last week — Magnificent!" She also attended a High Latin Mass with symphony and choir, which moved her deeply, and reflected that the altar reminded her of "St. Rory's." The card carries a striking dual postmark: an Army Postal Service APO 09108 cancel dated 30 Sep 1987 alongside a Pittsburgh PA 152 receiving mark dated Oct 5 1987, with a USA 22¢ Flag stamp — routed through U.S. military mail.
