Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising dramatically against a blue Austrian sky, the Gothic spires and chevron-patterned tile roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral dominate this vivid chrome-era view of Vienna's most beloved landmark — a church that survived both World War II bombing and Napoleon, still standing as the soul of the city. Millie, writing from a hotel just across the street from the Stephansdom, gushed to her family back in Akron, Ohio: "I love it here. It's a beautiful city." The card traveled by air mail (Flugpost) from Wien, franked with an Austrian stamp bearing a Baroque church vignette, a fitting choice for a message sent in the shadow of one of Europe's greatest medieval cathedrals. The south tower soars 136 meters; restoration scaffolding visible at right hints at the postwar reconstruction effort still ongoing in the early 1960s.
