Schönbrunn Palace glows like an amber jewel in this dramatic nighttime chrome view — the vast Baroque façade of the Habsburg imperial summer residence blazing with golden floodlights reflected in a dark foreground pool, while a monumental sculptural fountain group surges upward at right, its bronze figures caught mid-gesture in the artificial light. Doris, writing in May 1970 from Vienna amid a whirlwind European itinerary, dashed off an exuberant note to a friend at the Baptist Retirement Home in Maywood, Illinois: "Having a good tour but a very busy one — Hardly time to sleep." She rattled off her upcoming stops — Yugoslavia, Venice, the French Alps, Switzerland, England — before signing off warmly. The Austrian stamp, a magenta/red Republik Österreich issue, is tied with a Wien cancel and accompanied by a striking boxed advertising slogan cancel reading "Erfolg durch Milch" (Success through Milk) — a wonderfully incongruous piece of postal history on a card from one of Europe's grandest palaces.
