Antique & Vintage Postcards

Against a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped Nordkette peaks, the gilded Baroque facade of Innsbruck's imperial Hofburg Palace glows golden in this mid-century color photograph — vintage automobiles and strolling visitors frozen in a moment of postwar Austrian optimism. The Hofburg, originally built in the 15th century and expanded under Empress Maria Theresa into its current grandeur, anchors the Tyrolean capital with unmistakable Habsburg authority. Photographer Erwin Steinmann captured this view for Tiroler Graphik's tourist trade, likely in the early-to-mid 1950s judging by the car styles visible in the foreground. The postcard was produced from an original color film negative ("Aufnahme nach original Farbfilm"), a then-modern technique lending the image vivid, warm tones uncommon in earlier lithographic cards. Unused and clean, it carries a penciled price notation of "100" (Groschen, presumably) suggesting it was a shop stock card never sent.
