Postcard c1910 Wien Vienna Prater Hauptallee Elevated Railway Austria Pre-Linen

Vienna, Austria1908Pre-linenGood

A ghostly early electric train glides across an ornate iron viaduct above the Prater's grand tree-lined Hauptallee (Main Avenue) in this hauntingly beautiful hand-tinted card from Edwardian Vienna — the distant silhouette of the famous Riesenrad Ferris wheel is just visible on the left horizon, placing this scene squarely in the beloved amusement park district that Viennese of every class flocked to on Sundays. The Stadtbahn (city railway) viaduct shown was designed by Otto Wagner, the legendary Viennese Secessionist architect, whose elegant iron-and-stone elevated stations transformed late imperial Vienna's transit infrastructure into civic art. The tinting is cool blue-green, lending the wide boulevard an almost dreamlike quality. The back is entirely undivided-style blank — no publisher imprint visible — suggesting a very early printing, circa 1905–1912, before divided-back standardization took universal hold in Austria.
