Antique & Vintage Postcards

Tucked into a sun-drenched plateau above Innsbruck, the charming village of Igls basks in Alpine splendour — lush meadows in harvest gold roll toward the compact church spire and scattered chalets, while behind them the limestone ramparts of the Patscherkofel (2,246 m) and the snow-streaked Serles massif frame the scene in the kind of theatrical grandeur that made Tyrol the definitive postwar tourism destination. Igls itself would gain world fame as a venue for the 1976 Winter Olympics bobsled and luge events, but in this circa 1960 chrome-era photograph by local studio Photo Garstenauer it still has the sleepy, pastoral quality of a village discovered rather than marketed. The scalloped deckle edge, saturated Kodachrome-style colour, and the bold red-on-white "Igls / Tirol" title panel with the Tyrolean eagle emblem make this a handsome specimen of Austrian alpine postcard art at its midcentury peak.
