Postcard 1931 Training School Michigan State Normal College Ypsilanti MI Linen

Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA1931LinenGood

A cheerful November greeting traveled from a college town in 1931 — sent by a student named Jane who was clearly charmed by her new social circle at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti. The colorful lithograph captures the red-brick Training School building in full Romanesque Revival glory: arched windows, a colonnaded entrance, and an American flag snapping from the rooftop cupola, all set against a vivid turquoise sky typical of the era's hand-colored printing. Michigan State Normal College (today's Eastern Michigan University) was Michigan's first public institution of higher education, founded in 1849, and its Training School was a pioneering laboratory school where future teachers practiced their craft. Jane writes enthusiastically about dormitory life, mentions that the girls were in the houses already, and warmly recommends a young man from Ypsilanti — a sophomore who is "also a student in college" — describing him as "very nice." The card was postmarked November 16, 1931, and mailed to Henry and his wife at their Flint address, offering a vivid slice of Depression-era college social life.
