Postcard 1904 County Courthouse Peoria IL Printed Germany Pre-Linen Color

Peoria, Illinois, USA1904Pre-linenFair-Good

Peoria's grand Romanesque Revival courthouse commands this richly hand-colored German-printed card, its terracotta-red dome rising above a circular Civil War monument surrounded by immaculate landscaped drives — a civic pride statement in cardstock form from the Gilded Age heartland. Printed in Germany under "Serie 244," the card's lithographic color rivals the finest European souvenir production of its era, giving Peoria's brownstone courthouse an almost regal gravitas. Visible at the right edge is what appears to be the marquee of the "Grand" theater, anchoring the commercial neighborhood just off the square. Tucked inside the folded card is a charming miniature accordion booklet insert showing the "South View of Rose Island – Glen Oak Park," a beloved Peoria recreation spot — a rare surviving paper ephemera bonus. The Peoria County Courthouse depicted here was demolished in 1964, making this image a precious record of lost architecture.
