Antique & Vintage Postcards

Towering Gothic-Revival brick gables peer through a canopy of mature elms on this linen-stock postcard of the Deutsches Altenheim — the German Old Peoples Home at 7824 W. Madison Street in Forest Park, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago with deep German-American roots. Founded in 1882 by the Frauen-Verein des Deutschen Altenheims and incorporated in Illinois in 1885, the institution grew to 20 acres and housed some 300 residents by the time this card was printed — its fourth building having been completed in 1940, making that the earliest possible production date. The reverse carries a bilingual institutional history printed in German blackletter and English, a charming artifact of the Chicago-area German immigrant community's proud organizational culture. Printed by the renowned Curt Teich "C.T. Photo-Platin" process in Chicago, this is a high-quality linen representative of Midwest ethnic institutional history. Unused, with a handwritten price "3" suggesting a nominal sale price.
