Postcard 1907 Sanitarium Clifton Springs NY Rotochrome Rochester News Co

Clifton Springs, New York, USA1905Pre-linenExcellent

Clifton Springs Sanitarium rises in magnificent Romanesque Revival grandeur from its Ontario County grounds — twin copper-domed towers flanking a soaring central clock-and-arch campanile of red brick, the long covered promenade stretching across the foreground like a promise of therapeutic calm. Founded in 1850 by Dr. Henry Foster and famous for its sulfur springs cure, the Clifton Springs Sanitarium was one of the most celebrated health resorts in nineteenth-century America, drawing patients from across the country seeking relief from rheumatism, nervous disorders, and tuberculosis. This early Rotochrome card, printed in Germany for the Rochester News Company, captures the institution at the height of its Victorian prestige — unused and in excellent preservation.
