Antique & Vintage Postcards

Soaring Beaux-Arts arches in cream and forest green frame a serene, fully set dining room at the Prince George Hotel on East 28th Street just off Fifth Avenue — white-draped tables, carved wooden chairs upholstered in red and green, and small table lamps waiting for the dinner rush in what the card's own copy calls "stately charm, fine taste and excellent cuisine." Opened in 1904 and designed by Howard Greenley, the Prince George was for decades one of Manhattan's premier mid-priced hotels; by April 1951, when someone penciled the date on the back of this unused advertising card, it was still in its prime. The hotel later fell into decline but was converted in the 1990s to supportive housing — making this linen-era interior view a rare document of its golden age.
