Antique & Vintage Postcards

A vivid chromolithograph captures the Moorish-Revival grandeur of Temple Beth-El on Fifth Avenue at 76th Street, its scalloped green dome rising above ivy-draped limestone walls in the golden light of an Edwardian summer — one of Manhattan's most celebrated synagogues before its 1947 demolition made way for the present structure. Sent from New York City on July 20, 1908, the card carries an urgent, travel-weary note: Grant tells R.B. he arrived at 11 last night, is leaving for Manhattan the next morning, and that parting with "Guy" at Harrisburg caused him "a great deal of sorrow" — a fleeting window into the bonds and journeys of Gilded Age men on the move. The card was addressed to Ridgway, Pennsylvania and bears a fine 1-cent Benjamin Franklin stamp.
