Antique & Vintage Postcards

The Ansonia — that soaring Beaux-Arts wedding cake of the Upper West Side — fills every inch of this lustrous Detroit Photographic Company halftone, its rounded corner tower and elaborately encrusted stone façade photographed when the building was barely three years old and Broadway was still relatively open around it. Copyright 1904 by the Detroit Photographic Co., this undivided-back card was written on November 17, 1906, with a tender inscription on the front — "from Papa" — a father sending a New York landmark to someone back home, perhaps a child fascinated by the city's dizzying vertical ambitions. The Ansonia, completed 1904, would soon house Enrico Caruso, Babe Ruth, and Igor Stravinsky; this card catches it in its earliest celebrity.
