Antique & Vintage Postcards

Step inside the sleek Art Deco interior of Smith Brothers' Candy Counter and Luncheonette in Poughkeepsie, New York — a long corridor of gleaming red stools, walnut-paneled booths with chrome tables, a chevron-patterned carpet in oxblood and forest green, and Streamline Moderne pendant lights in amber and yellow casting a warm, optimistic glow that speaks to mid-century American commercial design at its most confident. Smith Brothers, globally famous since 1847 for their cough drops (manufactured right in Poughkeepsie), operated this elegant retail and dining space as part of their brand empire. The reverse lists Poughkeepsie's points of civic pride — the home of Governor George Clinton, the site of the Federal Constitution's 1788 ratification, Vassar College, and the Smith Brothers factory itself. Unposted and in excellent condition, this linen card is a rare piece of American confectionery and soda-fountain history.
