Postcard c1905 Bosnia Viehmarkt Cattle Market Sarajevo Photochrom Color

Bosnia (likely along the Miljacka or Bosna river), Bosnia and Herzegovina1905Pre-linenExcellent

A sea of fezzes, turbans, and embroidered vests surges across a riverbank marketplace in turn-of-the-century Bosnia — this breathtaking bird's-eye photochrom postcard documents a bustling livestock market (Viehmarkt in Bosnien) where hundreds of traders, farmers, and animals crowd a pebbly shore beside a glinting waterway, every figure dressed in the rich ethnic patchwork of late Ottoman-era Balkan life. Men in red fezzes mingle with figures in white čakšire trousers, women in blue dimije, and children darting between the legs of cattle, donkeys, and horses. The vivid hand-applied color process by the Photochrom Company (stamped on the reverse) transforms what would have been a monochrome glass-plate negative into a scene of almost cinematic richness. Published by Daniel A. Kajon of Sarajevo — one of the most prolific postcard publishers in Austro-Hungarian Bosnia — and numbered 7517, this card dates to approximately 1900–1908, the period of Austro-Hungarian administration before the 1908 annexation formalized Sarajevo's Imperial status. The multilingual reverse (Cyrillic, Latin Bosnian, German, Hungarian) reflects the card's intended reach across the entire Habsburg Empire.
