Postcard c1900 Bosnia Bosnischer Holzverkäufer Wood Seller Horse Photochrom

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Austro-Hungarian Empire)1902Pre-linenExcellent

A proud Bosnian wood seller stands beside his heavily laden pack horse on a cobbled hillside above a town, his striped turban blazing red and gold, his embroidered vest cinched with a broad sash — one of the most visually arresting ethnographic postcards to emerge from Austro-Hungarian Bosnia, titled Bosnischer Holzverkäufer / Konj sa drvima / Коњ са дрвима ("Bosnian wood seller / Horse with wood"). The man's calm, direct gaze into the lens gives the image a portrait-like dignity unusual for genre cards of this era, while behind him a string of pack horses disappears under enormous loads of cut timber, a tombstone-studded Muslim graveyard visible in the middle distance and red-roofed Sarajevo spreading across the valley below. The photochrom coloring, applied by the Graphische Kunstanstalt M. Schulz of Prague under the Photochrom Prague imprint, saturates the scene with cobalt sky and rich earth tones. Published by J. Studnička & Co. of Sarajevo and numbered 1976, this card dates to c.1900–1905 — the high point of Austro-Hungarian ethnographic postcard production in the Balkans.
