Postcard 1900s Bosnia Woman Traditional Costume Gruss aus Bosnien Photochrom

Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina1905Pre-linenExcellent

A jewel-toned vision from the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire — a young Bosnian woman stands proudly in full ceremonial dress, her embroidered green-and-gold outer robe (džuba) flung open to reveal a richly layered costume of gilded waistcoat, white chemise, and brilliant red-plaid sash; amber bead strands cascade down her chest while a crimson fez trimmed in gold coins crowns her chestnut hair. This stunning Photochrom-process card was produced in Prague by the Graphic Arts Institute of M. Schulz for J. Studničká & Co. of Sarajevo — a top-tier publisher active in Bosnia under Austro-Hungarian administration — placing the image squarely in the 1900–1910 "Golden Age" of the postcard. The trilingual back (Bosnian Dopisnica, German Ansichtskarte, Cyrillic Дописница) reflects the region's complex cultural layering, and the "Gruss aus Bosnien / Pozdrav iz Bosne / Поздравъ из Босне" caption was a collector favourite across Europe. Card number 1997 in the Photochrom Prague catalogue.
