Postcard 1900s Das Männleinlaufen Nuremberg Frauenkirche Mechanical Novelty

Nuremberg, Germany1905Pre-linenExcellent

A marvel of paper engineering from Edwardian-era Germany, this novelty mechanical postcard captures the famous Männleinlaufen clock on the Frauenkirche in Nuremberg — a gilded automaton spectacle that has drawn crowds since 1509. The richly chromolithographed front depicts the seven Electors processing before Emperor Karl IV on his throne, flanked by armored knights, all beneath a blue-and-gold astronomical clock face whose hands show just past noon — the very moment the daily pageant plays out in real life. Flip the card open and a die-cut paper gear wheel is revealed on the reverse, once interactive with the clock hands on the front via a brass brad, allowing the recipient to spin the Electors themselves. The German text commemorates Emperor Karl's Golden Bull decree requiring every new Kaiser to hold his first Reichstag in Nuremberg; it credits the 16th-century coppersmith Lindenast for the figures and J. Heuß for the clockwork. This mechanical "Leporello" fold format is scarce, and examples with the gear mechanism intact are seldom found in this condition.
