Postcard Thornton Academy Saco ME c1902 Souvenir Booklet Biddeford Maine

Saco, Maine, USA1902Pre-linenGood

A striking Richardsonian Romanesque tower anchors the main building of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine — here depicted twice across a remarkable surviving ephemera grouping: a hand-coloured standalone postcard (card no. not printed) addressed to one John in West Somerville, Massachusetts, and a black-and-white accordion-fold souvenir booklet of Biddeford and Saco mailed in its original illustrated envelope. The envelope, postmarked from what appears to be Guilford, ME, bears a 1-cent green Washington stamp and is addressed to John at 15 Winter St., West Somerville — the booklet inside unfolds to reveal multiple views of local landmarks including Thornton Academy, a soldiers' monument, and dramatic waterfall scenes, all in crisp photomechanical reproduction. Thornton Academy, founded in 1811, is one of the oldest continuously operating secondary schools in New England; the Romanesque main building shown here was constructed in 1894 and remains a campus landmark. The souvenir booklet format — common 1898–1910 — was the Instagram of its day, letting travellers share a curated set of views in a single mailing, and the survival of both envelope and intact accordion fold is genuinely uncommon.
