Postcard 1940s US Post Office Hutchinson Kansas Linen Unused C Kropp

Hutchinson, Kansas, USA1943LinenExcellent

Austere, monumental, and unmistakably New Deal in spirit, the U.S. Post Office in Hutchinson, Kansas rises in cream-colored limestone on this crisp linen postcard from the 1940s — its severe modernist facade a testament to the WPA-era federal building program that brought dignified public architecture to mid-sized American cities during the Depression and war years. Published by the celebrated C. Kropp Company of Milwaukee, the card was never mailed, preserving its linen surface in near-pristine condition. The reverse notes that the building also housed the Internal Revenue Department, Army and Navy Recruiting Service, Agricultural Department, Forest Service, and other Federal Offices — a reminder of how much civic life converged under one federal roof in small-city America. Hutchinson, the "Salt City" of south-central Kansas, was a bustling agricultural and industrial hub, and this building served as its governmental anchor for decades.
