Joliet, Illinois, USA1934LinenGood

Red-brick Gothic Revival towers and symmetrical three-story wings give St. Francis Academy in Joliet, Illinois an air of dignified Catholic educational tradition in this bright linen-era view — leafy maples line the curved drive in full summer foliage, and an American flag crowns the central tower against a cloud-dotted blue sky. The Academy, operated by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Immaculate, was a prominent girls' school and has since been redeveloped, making early postcard images of the campus increasingly scarce. Mailed on August 14, 1934 from Joliet — in the depths of the Great Depression — the card carries a brief note from Roy and Gladys to a couple named W. and their household in Port Huron, Michigan, mentioning a visit to a place called Hannit and a promise to write more later, a small but touching cross-country family check-in from the era.
