Postcard 1906 German Building Jackson Park Chicago World's Fair Linen Era

Chicago, Illinois, USA1906Pre-linenFair-Good

A teacher writes home from the ghost of a vanished world — dated Sep 30, 1906, this hand-colored card depicts the ornate German Building that once graced Jackson Park, Chicago, a surviving remnant of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The half-timbered Bavarian-Renaissance structure, crowned by a soaring lantern tower with gilded finial and capped with terracotta orange tile, stood as one of the few foreign pavilions retained after the fair closed. The sender, addressing "Dear Allie," mentions this is "one of the bldgs from the world's fair at Jackson Park" and asks how she is getting along — a casual note that inadvertently documents the building's existence thirteen years after the fair. On the reverse, written in the same hand, the writer reveals a busy life: teaching 35 freshmen, grading "pay pupils on the side," and anticipating freedom when "this year ends." The card was mailed from Chicago on October 4, 1906, to Miss Allie at 2210 Titus Ave., Cleveland, Ohio — a glimpse into the quiet correspondence of an Edwardian-era schoolteacher.
