Postcard 1938 Hotel Johnstown NY Linen "Mrs. Godwin" to Master Harry Washington DC

Johnstown, New York, USA1938LinenGood

A warm and wistful note from upstate New York — postmarked November 20, 1938, this vivid linen-era card showcases the Hotel Johnstown in Johnstown, New York, its red-brick Colonial Revival façade adorned with a grand white-columned portico, American flag flying proudly overhead, and yellow rocking chairs beckoning on the porch. "Mrs. Godwin" writes to young Harry in Washington, D.C., lamenting that if only he had been with her at the hotel, he could have eaten there "instead of wasting all that work at the picnic at Great Falls." She sends her love to his "mabs and daddy" and promises to see them "next week" — a touching snapshot of Depression-era family social life. The address notation "1671 (the House in the Park)" adds a charming, almost storybook quality to the correspondence. Published by the Curt Teich & Co. linen process, the card's brilliant reds and greens are characteristic of late-1930s American linen printing at its finest.
