Postcard c1930s Post Office Johnstown NY Linen "Katheryn" Jack Washington DC

Johnstown, New York, USA1935LinenGood

Pride in civic architecture radiates from this colorful linen-era view of the United States Post Office in Johnstown, New York — a handsome Beaux-Arts limestone temple fronted by soaring Corinthian columns, American flag aloft, and a vintage open-touring automobile parked smartly at the curb, its occupants elegantly posed as if for a society photograph. "Katheryn" writes breezily to young Jack in Washington, D.C.: "Here is another card for the collection. The people in this town are very proud of their pretty P.O." — a delightful meta-commentary on postcard collecting itself, sent on a postcard. The card is addressed to "Master Jack" at 1763(?) Madison St. NW, Washington D.C., with the whimsical annotation "1671 (the House in the Park)" added in a different hand, suggesting the same household as the companion Hotel Johnstown card (PC-03134). Published by C.W. Hughes & Co. of Mechanicville, NY, with the "Star Quality" imprint and Curt Teich Chicago printing, this card captures small-city American institutional pride in the linen era.
