Postcard c1905 Syracuse NY Erie Canal Savings Bank Opera House Pull-Out Views

Syracuse, New York, USA1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Standing at the heart of Syracuse, New York's commercial district, the Erie Canal cuts a vivid blue-green ribbon between the ornate Romanesque Revival Savings Bank and the towering white commercial block in this brilliant chromolithograph cover — turn the small metal crank and a long accordion strip of additional Syracuse views cascades down, including Crouse College at Syracuse University and the New York Central Railroad Station, all captured in the warm palette of the early 1900s "Souvenir Mail Card" era. Published by Wm. E. Shoudy of Syracuse, this patented novelty pull-out card (Patent No. 806631, Dec. 5, 1905) is a miniature time capsule of a city then at the peak of its canal-era prosperity, when horse-drawn wagons still crowded the towpath and the Erie Canal was a living commercial artery rather than a historical memory. The card was never mailed — the address side is blank — making it a pristine example of a type that few people ever mailed at all, preferring to keep the novelty intact.
