Postcard c1905 Fall River MA North Main St City Hall Pull-Out Novelty Views

Fall River, Massachusetts, USA1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Horse-drawn wagons jostle with electric streetcars along Fall River, Massachusetts' bustling North Main Street as seen from City Hall — a lively street-level panorama teeming with commerce, awnings, and pedestrians captured in crisp photographic halftone on this patented novelty pull-out postcard from circa 1905. A small gold-toned metal crank on the right edge, stamped with the same patent date of December 5, 1905 (No. 806631), releases an accordion strip of additional Fall River views including Bradford Durfee Textile School, the City Hall, and the Court House — institutions that defined this once-mighty New England textile manufacturing city at its industrial apex. The back cover reads simply "Fall River." in typewriter font, and the reverse carries the Rotograph Co., N.Y. City (Germany) imprint with "Postage One Cent To All Countries," placing manufacture in Germany for the American market — a common practice of the Edwardian souvenir card trade. The card is unused and unaddressed, a rare survival of a novelty format that was more often handled to pieces than preserved.
