Postcard 1911 Essex Street Lawrence MA Trolley Street Scene Mason Bros

Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA1911Pre-linenGood

A red electric streetcar glides down the wide commercial corridor of Essex Street in Lawrence, Massachusetts, as horse-drawn wagons and early automobiles jostle for position — a vivid freeze-frame of a city mid-transition between the horse age and the motor age, postmarked July 10, 1911. Striped awnings shelter the bustling sidewalks, a domed civic building looms in the hazy middle distance, and the tall cream-brick commercial block at center anchors the block with Gilded Age confidence. Lawrence, then one of America's great textile-mill cities, pulsed with immigrant workers and commercial energy; Essex Street was its Main Street. The sender — whose handwriting runs sideways across the left message panel — wrote to Joe in Center Dorchester with what appears to be affectionate but slightly melancholy news about friends and neighbors moving on. Published by Mason Bros. & Co. of Boston and printed in the rich hand-colored style of the era, the card bears a one-cent Franklin stamp and a crisp Lawrence, Mass. machine cancel.
