Antique & Vintage Postcards

Tucked inside a richly embossed postcard depicting a miniature red leather-bound album labelled Souvenir Greetings — surrounded by blue pansies and a framed vignette of a lone pine tree above a mountain lake — is a delightful leporello strip of Dartmouth College and Hanover, New Hampshire views, opening with the stately neoclassical columns of Webster Hall and unfolding through Tucker Hall, a residential building, and further campus scenes, all in crisp photographic halftone. The cover is printed in Germany by the design of H. Hyman, a prolific embossed-postcard artist of the Edwardian era, and published by the College Book Store in Hanover — a rare instance of the campus bookstore as postcard publisher. Dated November 30, 1908 and mailed to Miss Sadie in Dorchester, Massachusetts (33 Monadnock Street), the sender notes matter-of-factly: "At this visiting the ground is covered white with snow B." — a perfectly atmospheric November Dartmouth dispatch.
