Philadelphia Independence Hall Souvenir Leporello Postcard 1905 Rotograph

Philadelphia, USA1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Tucked inside a palm-sized celluloid-edged case, this ingenious 1905 accordion-fold souvenir unfurls like a tiny time machine — revealing Philadelphia's grandest landmarks in crisp black-and-white photographic miniatures, from the clock-towered facade of Independence Hall framed by bare winter elms to the columned Chestnut Street Post Office, Independence Square, the Philadelphia R.R. Depot, and the University of Pennsylvania campus. Patented December 5, 1905 (U.S. Patent No. 806,631), the leporello format — a strip of images folded concertina-style and housed in a printed card cover — was a novelty souvenir craze of the Edwardian era, allowing travelers to send a whole city tour in a single mailing for just one cent. The reverse of the outer cover card is printed by the Rotograph Co. of New York City (printed in Germany), No. 295a, and bears a handwritten destination of "Philadelphia / No. 582," suggesting it may have been a retailer's stock number. The brass eyelet hinge on the cover is intact though the card shows honest age wear, a central horizontal crease, and surface toning consistent with its 119-year history.
