Postcard c1950 Lawrence MA Post Office Chrome Unused American Art Postcard Co

Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA1952ChromeExcellent

A stately Neoclassical colonnaded post office anchors the corner of a leafy Lawrence, Massachusetts street in this crisp mid-century chrome postcard — a 1950s-era Chevrolets and Pontiac sedans gleam at the curb while a traffic officer's kiosk stands sentinel on the sidewalk, freezing a quiet moment of postwar American civic life in a city that had been one of the great textile manufacturing capitals of the world. Lawrence, built on the Merrimack River and famous for the 1912 "Bread and Roses" labor strike, is captured here in its prosperous postwar calm. Published by the American Art Postcard Co. of Boston, Massachusetts under their "Photolux" photographic process, this chrome-era card (number 7176) was never mailed — the address side is blank save a penciled dealer price notation "1¢/21" in the corner — making it a fresh, unhandled example of a genre that documented mid-century America's public architecture with quiet fidelity.
