Antique & Vintage Postcards

A hushed cathedral of old-growth trees arches over a sandy woodland path in Lynn, Massachusetts — this is the trail to Dungeon Rock, one of New England's most haunted and storied spots, where a pirate's treasure was said to be buried and a spiritualist named Hiram Marble spent decades in the 1800s tunneling by candlelight, guided by séances, searching for it. The Rotograph Company captured this atmospheric scene in 1905, their photographic halftone process lending the image a silver-grey luminosity that suits the eerie subject perfectly. A partial structure — likely the entrance shelter — peeks in at the lower left, grounding the viewer at the trailhead. The undivided back and one-cent domestic postage designation firmly date this to the pre-1907 era, making it among the earliest postcard records of this Lynn Woods landmark. Unused and clean, it is a fine example of early American nature/landscape postal art.
