Postcard 1917 Man trennt sich Jugend Song Card Edmund Eysler Operette Austria

Vienna, Austria1917Pre-linenExcellent

A rare folding music card from Vienna's golden age of operetta — this is Molitor's Liederkarte No. 7, a pocket-sized songsheet postcard bearing the complete melody and lyrics to Man trennt sich so schwer von der Jugend! ("It is so hard to part with youth!"), a wistful waltz-song from Edmund Eysler's operette Der Aushilfsgatte. The cover illustration, signed by artist F. Werner and dated 1917, depicts a dapper silver-haired gentleman in morning coat and striped trousers, leaning jauntily on his cane — a perfect embodiment of the song's bittersweet theme. Inside, the full score unfolds in Moderato/Allegretto, with German lyrics by Oskar Friedmann and Ludwig Herzer. Published by Lyra-Verlag (H. Molitor) of Leipzig and Vienna, copyright 1917 by Ed. Strache of Warnsdorf, this is an extraordinary artifact of Central European popular culture on the eve of Austria-Hungary's collapse. Edmund Eysler was one of Vienna's most beloved operetta composers, and ephemera tied to his wartime works are increasingly scarce. The reverse carries Austrian postal instructions and an advertisement for Rudolf Kronegger's "Die Stadt unserer Sehnsucht," the self-proclaimed "most beautiful Viennese song."
