Elm-canopied Haverhill Street unfolds in a wash of hand-applied color — two women in long skirts pause at the Lawrence Street corner while a bandstand peeks through the foliage at left, capturing a genteel Massachusetts mill city in its Edwardian twilight. Lawrence, founded in 1845 as a planned industrial city on the Merrimack River, was famous for its textile mills and the 1912 Bread and Roses strike; this quiet residential scene offers a striking contrast to that labor history. The card traveled in September 1921, sent to a young woman named Edith in Orleans on Cape Cod, bearing a legible handwritten message on the divided back.
