Postcard 1906 Pleasant Street Malden Square MA Detroit Publishing Colorized

Malden, Massachusetts, USA1906Pre-linenExcellent

Trolley wires slice the sky above a bustling Pleasant Street in Malden, Massachusetts, circa 1906 — a man on a bicycle weaves past horse-drawn wagons while women in long skirts pause beneath striped awnings, and the spire of what appears to be Malden City Hall punctuates the background in blue-grey. This colorized lithograph by the renowned Detroit Publishing Company captures the commercial heart of Malden at the peak of its industrial prosperity, when the city's shoe and rubber factories drew workers from across New England. The right-hand building bears a partially legible sign for "Cliffo[rd]" house furnishings, one of many retailers catering to the growing middle class. Trolley tracks gleam in the foreground, evidence of the electric streetcar network that had transformed suburban commuting just a decade earlier. Card number 10159 places it firmly in Detroit Publishing's vast New England catalog, and the copyright stamp "1906 by Detroit Publishing Co." on the front face is a hallmark of the golden age of American viewcard production.
