Postcard c1907 Mt Holyoke Summit House Massachusetts Polychrome German Print

Mt. Holyoke (Skinner State Park), Hadley/South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA1908Pre-linenExcellent

Perched dramatically atop a wooded ridge, the Summit House at Mt. Holyoke in Massachusetts gleams white against a powder-blue sky — the hotel's broad red-roofed wings and wraparound observation decks visible above a sea of summer green, with a small gazebo nestled in the foliage below. The Summit House was a beloved destination from the mid-19th century onward, its peak offering one of the most celebrated panoramas in New England: the oxbow bend of the Connecticut River stretching out below, a view immortalized by Thomas Cole's 1836 painting. This Polychrome series card, published by E. F. Blise of Mt. Holyoke, Mass., and printed in Germany, dates to approximately 1907–1910 and represents the height of the imported German chromolithograph postcard trade that flooded American tourist markets before World War I disrupted transatlantic commerce. The back carries the divided-back format with postage instructions listing Cuba, Canada, and Mexico at 1¢ — a detail that helps date the card precisely.
