Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bold, barnyard-meets-boardroom energy leaps off this linen advertising card for Beverly's "Chicken in the Rough" — a rooster decked out in plaid knickers and a golf bag struts across a fairway, declaring "I'll gladly be fried for Chicken in the Rough," while the card promises fried half-chicken served unjointed, without silverware, alongside shoestring potatoes, jug honey, and hot buttered rolls. Beverly Osborne's nationally franchised concept, launched in Oklahoma City in the 1930s, was one of America's first branded restaurant chains and a genuine piece of roadside food history. Mailed from St. Petersburg, Florida in November 1953, the card carries a warm, chatty message to the Ed family in Huntington Mills, Pennsylvania: "Dear Becks: Arrived here Nov. 7, 1953 — seems like this year we'll all be wondering…" The back of this promotional card also doubles as a contest entry, offering a $100 prize to anyone who ate at 25 Chicken in the Rough locations — an early loyalty program in postcard form.
