Postcard c1910 Prince Rupert Kaien Island BC Canada Hand-Tinted Gowen Sutton

Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada1910Pre-linenGood

From high on a coastal ridge, this sweeping hand-tinted panorama looks down over the brand-new boomtown of Prince Rupert clinging to the rocky shores of Kaien Island, British Columbia — its handful of buildings almost swallowed by the vast green wilderness and blue-grey Pacific inlet, the mountains brooding beyond. Prince Rupert was founded only in 1910 as the western terminus of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, making this card a rare document of the city in its very first years of existence, when surveyors' stakes were still fresh in the ground. Published by Gowen, Sutton Co. Ltd. of Vancouver, this unposted card was never sent, preserving the image in pristine condition — a time capsule of one of Canada's most dramatically sited new cities at the moment of its birth.
