Hollywood Bowl Amphitheater RPPC Postcard 1930s F.A. Bussey LA 373

Hollywood, California, USA1935RPPCGood

The iconic shell rises from the sun-bleached hillside in this stunning aerial real-photo view of the Hollywood Bowl, its concentric concrete arches glowing against the chaparral-covered slopes of the Santa Monica Mountains — a monument to open-air culture in its golden age. Photographer F.A. Bussey captured the vast empty amphitheater from an elevated vantage point, revealing the extraordinary scale of the terraced wooden bench seating fanning out toward the camera, row upon row stretching into the foreground, with small table-bench units visible in the reserved box sections near the stage. The Bowl opened in 1922 and by the 1930s had become one of the most celebrated outdoor venues in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of Angelenos each summer for symphony, opera, and popular concerts under the stars. This is catalog number LA 373 in Bussey's Los Angeles series, a professionally printed real-photo postcard on matte silver gelatin stock — the highest-resolution format of its era — capturing the landmark before the current larger shell was installed in 1929 or during the period shortly after.
