RPPC Postcard 1944 Rodeo Bull Rider Thrown Gazelle CA Ensign T-1601

Gazelle, California, USA1944RPPCFair-Good

A cowboy goes airborne in spectacular fashion — this action-packed real-photo postcard by photographer J.H. Ensign (no. T-1601) freezes the split-second a bull rider is launched from a bucking steer at a sun-drenched rodeo, his hat tumbling away as packed grandstands look on in delight. The caption below reads "HERE I AM, TAKIN' UP ANOTHER HOMESTEAD" — a wry, self-deprecating joke about landing face-first in the dirt. Mailed from Gazelle, California on May 11, 1944, this card was sent by "Pops" to his daughter Ann at 4808 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, California, with a cryptic but charming note directing her to look "under the towels on the lowest shelf of the bathroom towel shelves" — hinting at a hidden gift. The wartime "For Defense" stamp adds patriotic context to this snapshot of home-front Americana.
