Postcard Typical Pottery Vendors Texcoco Mexico Chrome Fischgrund Luis Marquez

Texcoco, State of Mexico, Mexico1945ChromeFair-Good

Two indigenous Mexican vendors stride along a dusty path through vivid green fields, each bent nearly double under a towering pyramid of terracotta ollas — the great red clay pots stacked four and five high, dwarfing the white-clad figures beneath wide straw sombreros, their feet in simple sandals, a line of palms hazy on the horizon — a scene photographer Luis Márquez froze in striking Kodachrome-era color that makes the crimson pottery glow like embers against the pale blue sky. The card documents traditional pottery distribution in Texcoco, State of Mexico, a region long famous since pre-Columbian times for its ceramics and the market culture surrounding Lake Texcoco. Published by Publicaciones Fischgrund under its prestigious Arco Iris (Rainbow) series, with photo credit to the celebrated Mexican documentary photographer Luis Márquez Romero, whose images defined Mexico's visual identity abroad in the mid-20th century. The reverse carries a note that Fischgrund also held exclusive publishing rights for Diego Rivera's pictorial maps — a remarkable cultural footnote on a single postcard.
