Antique & Vintage Postcards

Strollers browse a long arcade of open-fronted sidewalk market stalls in Ciudad Juárez, their awnings striped red-and-white like a festive border welcome, the shelves and overhangs bursting with serapes, leather goods, sombreros, carved wood, and woven baskets — a sensory marketplace that Florence and Elmer visited on April 23 (postmarked El Paso 1969) after a morning at Carlsbad Caverns, dashing off a note to Ruth in Detroit before slipping back across the border. "It is very warm down here," Florence wrote in looping cursive. "We saw Carlsbad Caverns yesterday and that was fabulous. Today went to Mexico for rock gems but did not stay there." The postmark machine slogan — "Give to the March of Dimes" — adds a vivid period detail, while the Plastichrome colourpicture process by Petley Studios of Albuquerque renders the market's colors with warm chromatic richness typical of late-1960s travel cards.
