Antique & Vintage Postcards

Among the most arresting documents of Edwardian-era Mexico City street life, this hand-colored pre-linen postcard captures a remarkable scene: a man — a cargador, or professional porter — stoically carries an elderly woman seated in a wooden chair strapped to his back with rope, a food basket hanging from one arm and a walking stick in the other, against a backdrop of ornate iron railings and market awnings; published by J. G. Hatton of Mexico City and annotated on the back by a Mrs. Stebbins on January 15, 1945, the card is a vivid window into a pre-automobile urban service economy where human labor performed every task imaginable, and the cargador was as familiar a figure as the taxi is today.
