Crashing surf explodes against the curved granite seawall of Lynn Boulevard in what must have been a dramatic autumn or winter swell — the spray towers above the iron railing as Victorian-era homes and a warm sunset sky glow peacefully behind. Lynn, Massachusetts, hugging the northern shore of Massachusetts Bay, developed this ornate promenade boulevard in the late 19th century as a fashionable seaside address; the breakwater pictured here protected both the road and the handsome residential blocks that march along the ridge above. The card was sent to a Madam Geleyn at 55 Washington Avenue in Northampton, Mass., and the writer — signing as A.N. Rice — crafts a warm, slightly melancholy message touching on loneliness, thoughts of the recipient every day, and an affectionate wish to be remembered. The white-border format and CT/American Art Colored printing date the card to roughly 1920–1930, a period when Lynn was still a prosperous industrial and resort city famous for its shoe manufacturing and seaside parks.
