Postcard 1900s UDB Dalton MA Senator Crane Estate Detroit Publishing Phostint

Dalton, Massachusetts, USA1905Pre-linenExcellent

Seen from a passing train window, the rolling meadows and brick buildings of Dalton, Massachusetts spread across the Housatonic River valley in this early Phostint-process gem from Detroit Publishing — one of the most technically accomplished postcard publishers of the Edwardian era. The caption above the image identifies this as "The Home of Senator Crane and Where He Manufactures Paper for U.S. Money," a remarkable notation: Senator Winthrop Murray Crane (1853–1920) was the head of Crane & Co., the Dalton paper mill that has supplied the U.S. Bureau of Engraving with currency-grade rag paper since 1879 — a contract the company still holds today. A red-iron truss bridge crosses the mill pond just below a small dam; the brick mill building commands the hilltop above, with a church steeple and the Berkshire ridgeline beyond. This undivided-back card (address only on reverse, message space on face) dates to before March 1907, placing it firmly in the earliest UDB era. It was never mailed. Detroit Publishing's Phostint photochrome process gives the image a luminous, almost hand-tinted depth rare in contemporaneous cards.
