Postcard 1904 Looking for Game Cowgirl on Horseback Anglo Series D. Benedict

USA (Western/generic setting)1904Pre-linenGood

A smiling young woman in a wide-brimmed hat, blue blouse, red neckerchief, and riding pants sits astride a dark bay horse in a sun-drenched meadow, her expression playful and self-possessed — the title "Looking for Game" carrying a delicious double meaning that would not have been lost on Edwardian recipients. The painterly image, reproduced in rich lithographic color on a smooth card stock, is the work of D. Benedict of Chicago (copyright 1904), whose "Anglo Series" of Western and outdoor-themed cowgirl cards captured a moment when the romanticized American West was at peak popular fascination — Buffalo Bill's Wild West show was still touring, and cowgirl imagery projected independent feminine energy that was simultaneously exciting and socially acceptable. The undivided back with "This Side for the Address Only" and the US/Canada one-cent / Foreign two-cent postage notice places this card in the pre-1907 era, consistent with the 1904 copyright. Unused and unaddressed, the card retains vibrant color and minimal wear, a lovely example of the cowgirl postcard genre.
