Antique & Vintage Postcards

Stone towers rise against a cloud-streaked Bavarian sky in this exquisite sepia copperplate print — the medieval Kobolzellertor gate complex of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, its Gothic arch framing a cobbled passage that has beckoned travelers since the 14th century. The "Echter Handpressen-Kupferdruck" (genuine hand-press copperplate printing) technique gives the image a velvety tonal depth rarely seen in machine-printed cards of the era, capturing every weathered ashlar stone and the twin towers' steeply pitched roofs with near-photographic clarity. Rothenburg, one of Germany's best-preserved walled medieval towns, drew Romantic-era artists and early tourists alike, and this card — part of publisher Hermann A. Peters' dedicated Rothenburg series — was clearly aimed at the discerning collector or returning traveler.
