Postcard 1908 Christmas Xmas Boy Drummer German-American Humor Medina OH

Medina, Ohio, USA1908Pre-linenFair-Good

A gap-toothed boy in a floppy black cap bangs a snare drum with gleeful abandon while a fox peeks mischievously from the holly above — the whimsical sepia illustration is paired with dialect verse in mock Pennsylvania Dutch English: "I iss chust like oder boys — Making fun undl Chrismus noise," a winking nod to the large German-American communities that dominated Midwestern holiday card culture in the 1900s. The card carries "Xmas Greetings" and was sent — with warm affection — from a Jay to a Miss Katherine Carroll at 3749 East 71st Street in Cleveland, Ohio. The postmark reads Medina, Ohio (county seat of Medina County, southwest of Cleveland), and the green 1-cent stamp anchors the mailing to the 1905–1909 era of the divided-back postcard boom. The message sprawls across the correspondence side in small, cramped cursive, asking Katherine how she is, mentioning someone named Maud, a boy named Clyde, references to photographs, and the hope of seeing her — a small window into the busy social world of an Ohio small-town Christmas a century ago.
