Postcard Munich Wittelsbacherbrunnen Fountain Germany Tuck Oilette Charles Flower

Munich, Germany1905Pre-linenExcellent

Edwardian elegance flows in every brushstroke of this lustrous Raphael Tuck "Oilette" card — artist Charles F. Flower's vivid rendering of Munich's Wittelsbacher Fountain captures the great horseback figures surging from cascading water at the southern end of the Maximilian Platz, while fashionably dressed promenaders and a coal-black dog bring the scene to street-level life. Built in 1895 to designs by Adolf von Hildebrand, the fountain was already a beloved Munich landmark when Tuck's London-to-Berlin production pipeline produced this card, part of the prestigious "Wide Wide World" series (Postcard 7635). The back text, printed in elegant period type, explains the fountain's allegorical program — the destructive and fertilizing properties of water — making this as much a miniature art print as a souvenir.
