Antique & Vintage Postcards

A brass grommet and a yellow-painted metal eyelet are the ingenious mechanical heart of this 1905–1908 Kansas City, Missouri novelty postcard — pull the tab and a long accordion-fold strip of miniature city views cascades out from behind the imposing Custom House and Post Office façade, its great stone dome and Beaux-Arts colonnades surveying the horse-drawn traffic of a booming American city. The strip reveals Main Street North from 12th Street thronged with Victorian-era pedestrians in white summer dresses, the Board of Trade, and other civic landmarks — a city proud of its rapid transformation from frontier outpost to Midwestern commercial powerhouse. The card was mailed from Kansas City and sent to a recipient named Stella in Great Falls, Montana, addressed to the Maryland Apartments. The Rotograph Co. of New York City published the outer card; the pull-out mechanism was patented December 5, 1905 (U.S. Patent No. 806,631). A 1-cent Washington green stamp (Series of 1908–09) franked the "Souvenir Mail Card."
