Antique & Vintage Postcards

A silvery winter creek tumbles over flat shale stones beneath bare-limbed sycamores in this atmospheric black-and-white real-photo-style view of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park — one of the largest urban parks in the world at the turn of the last century, beloved by city dwellers escaping the cobblestones for a few hours of wooded quiet. Written in a bold hand across the sky, the sender — visiting from Philadelphia — dashes off a quick note to Agnes back in Trenton: "Am having a swell time." The card, published by the Rotograph Co. of New York (printed in Germany), was postmarked simultaneously in Philadelphia (Jan 31, 1907) and Trenton, NJ, its 1¢ Franklin stamp still vivid green against the cream stock.
